When I was a kid, we played the Parker Brother’s board game Monopoly with some regularity. It took a long time and we started far more games than we finished but we played.
Once while in early high school, I actually played at someone else’s house (my first away game) and discovered they had different rules than us. When I questioned them, they pulled out the rules of the game, (we must have lost ours) and I discovered that we had made up all kinds of stuff. The House of Bishop was not playing Monopoly, we were playing “Monopoly-ish.” I learned a valuable lesson that day, “Those who invent the game get to make the rules.”
A lot of people today think they are living Christian lives but in reality they are living something “Christian-ish” at best because they are not following God’s rules for Christian living. We don’t make the rules. Only God (the inventor of the game) gets to do that. God’s rule book is conveniently recorded in the Bible and not up for referendum.
When our way of thinking and the clear and consistent teachings of the Bible come into conflict, it is we who must adjust.
