Preaching to Offend (the Pharisee in me)

Preaching to Offend (the Pharisee in me)

My biggest challenge in preparing my new Radical Jesus series is not dealing with the Sermon on the Mount material. I have walked that path many times in twenty-five years of ministry and have a lot of people (both closer to God and smarter than me) to help guide me through sermons, books and commentaries. My challenge is to make sure that the Pharisees are properly offended. Not all those self righteous, hypocritical Pharisees out there, somewhere, but the Pharisee in me. I need to offend that part of me that wants to do things on my own, never be inconvenienced or uncomfortable, settles for so little, is more quick to offer judgement than mercy and who can find it easier to “unfriend” than work for peace. I need to make sure that I preach in a way that offends THAT GUY. If I can just reach that guy, this is going to be a terrific series…
